At sunset, the group gathered for photographs. The sky turned gold, then orange, then briefly became something language has never fully captured. ANTAR stood slightly outside every frame.

ANTAR 019
Antar at the Desert Safari

The desert had mastered simplicity. Sand stretched toward the horizon with quiet confidence. Dunes rose and fell like frozen waves. The sun seemed permanently employed. Wind moved patiently, rearranging the landscape one grain at a time. ANTAR arrived with a tourist group. Nobody knew when he had joined them. Nobody remembered seeing him board the vehicle. Yet there he was. The guide welcomed guests in several languages. Cameras appeared. Water bottles were inspected with unnecessary seriousness. ANTAR sat calmly in the back row, as if desert safaris had been part of his routine for centuries. The vehicle climbed a dune. Passengers screamed. ANTAR adjusted his bag. The vehicle descended. Passengers screamed louder. ANTAR looked out the window, mildly interested in the geometry of sand. A tourist asked if he was enjoying himself. "I believe the desert is," ANTAR replied. This did not answer the question. At sunset, the group gathered for photographs. The sky turned gold, then orange, then briefly became something language has never fully captured. ANTAR stood slightly outside every frame. At dinner, performers danced. Music drifted across the sand. Conversations became friendlier. The desert cooled. Someone offered ANTAR tea. He accepted. Someone asked where he was from. He pointed vaguely toward the horizon. The answer seemed reasonable enough. Later, while guests discussed the ride, the sunset, and tomorrow's plans, ANTAR quietly stood up and walked into the darkness beyond the camp lights. By morning, nobody could agree on when he had left. Or when he had arrived. The desert kept the secret. End of Log #019
