ANTAR in Monaco

Monaco had perfected the art of expensive confidence.

Cars whispered instead of drove. Watches sparkled with the urgency of small planets. Even the pigeons seemed financially stable. Yachts floated nearby like floating board meetings that had accidentally learned relaxation.

ANTAR arrived walking.

This immediately made him suspicious.

People in Monaco usually arrived in ways that involved engines, invitations, or inherited surnames. ANTAR carried only his old bag and the expression of a man mildly interested in architecture but deeply unconcerned with prestige.

A valet spotted him first.

“Sir, your vehicle?”

ANTAR looked around at the coastline, the hills, the polished glass. “Time,” he answered honestly.

The valet nodded slowly, the way people do when deciding not to continue a conversation.

ANTAR wandered near the casino, where tourists practiced wealth and wealthy people practiced appearing accidental. He watched a man lose money with heroic calm. He watched another win money with visible disappointment.

A woman in sunglasses asked ANTAR if he was “someone important.”

ANTAR considered this carefully.

“Not consistently,” he replied.

Meanwhile, a bright red sports car alarm activated for no reason whatsoever as ANTAR walked past it. Then another. Then a third. Security looked concerned. ANTAR looked apologetic to the machines.

At the marina, someone offered him champagne. He accepted the glass, inspected the bubbles like a scientist reviewing unusual weather, and placed it untouched on a nearby table.

The sea breeze moved through Monaco with practiced elegance. ANTAR stood still long enough to notice how loudly luxury tries to whisper.

Then he resumed walking uphill, passing boutiques where a single shoe cost more than some kingdoms once collected in taxes.

Nobody stopped him.

Everybody noticed him.

Monaco continued shining.

ANTAR continued existing.
